Shifting to Engagement

Our popular Shifting to Engagement series is recommended for anyone who works with volunteers, novice or expert, and is $100.

There is an important distinction to be made between the management of volunteers and the engagement of volunteers. The first focuses on the day to day management of volunteers and the staff that work with them. Volunteer engagement, on the other hand, is more strategic in focus. It goes above good volunteer management practices and includes influencing and negotiating within one’s organization, to promote the value of volunteering and a good volunteer management support system to staff at all levels. Creating a culture of engagement at an organizational level requires buy-in, and different skills, abilities and competencies are needed to achieve this.

This series will introduce the benefits of moving from volunteer management to volunteer engagement at your organization. There are 4 lessons, which can be taken all together in sequence (recommended), or you can register for each lesson individually as they are released over the summer. The first session is an introduction to the notion of volunteer engagement verses volunteer management, and provides strategies that will help you facilitate this shift throughout your organization. The 3 remaining sessions will look at specific tips, tools and best practices related to the volunteer development cycle, but through a volunteer engagement lens.
